Do I have to claim my parents’ income on a Medicaid application in NY?
Question by : Do I have to claim my parents’ income on a Medicaid application in NY?
I’m 18 and I live with my parents, but I work full time and support myself. I’m trying to get prenatal care for myself and my baby, but my parents make 150k and I know that is too much to qualify. Why do I have to claim their income if I’m an independent part of their household? It seems impossible to find prenatal health insurance, are there any other options?
Please don’t just assume they can afford it because you don’t know that. We are actually quite stretched already as a family.

Yes. When you apply for welfare, it’s HOUSEHOLD income that counts, because they are supporting you, in the form of room, board, utilities, etc. There’s no such thing as “independent part of their household”, as evidenced by their claiming you on their tax returns as a dependent.
It is too late to buy prenatal health insurance, when you’re already pregnant.
You’re going to be paying cash for the medical care for this baby. Since you live at home, it’s not a stretch that you should be able to pay the 0 a month or so, from your earnings, for the medical care you want.
Give your answer to this question below!
To apply for medicaid, you must either claim the income of everyone in the household or move out and start your own household. Medicaid eligibility is based on the total income of the entire household in which you live, not the income of an “independent part” of that household.
The options are:
a. Move out. Have your own household, somewhere else.
b. Do not get prenatal insurance. Have them pay out of pocket for all your prenatal care. If they make $150K, then they can afford it.
c. If possible, have them add you to their insurance.
I see you want to get prenatal care for your baby so you can get a education is that correct?
You are benefiting from a 150,000 lifestyle that most people aren’t lucky enough to have.
You have to realize that you have two things going for you that may disqualify you first you’re lucky to have a full time job your a hard worker that is admirable.
Second; you have to much assets being diverted to you.
Third; You benefit from free rent living in a place that requires your parents $150,000 income that now no one is really going to believe you are a –”independent”– you can’t have it both ways.
You have to prove you’re not just working the system even if you are fudging a bit; I’m not being judgmental but we have many people with these invisible trust funds that want to take every edge they can that they don’t really qualify for as their “life style is that of a new generation.
Of “The I deserve it generation”.
Like the cry baby doctors that think they shouldn’t have to pay for their student loans.
I.E. the doctor that complains of his malpractice insurance costs $50,000 makes $350,000 plus a year and more. Also owns a multi million dollar medical center but shows no profit.
Then 10 to 20 years later sells it for for 25 to 35 million or more than cost and then pays his long term gain taxes pockets 15 to 21 million in profit but never pays his student loans damn you know it’s true & these s.o.b.s think they are not doing anything wrong by taking that edge of not paying their student loans. That’s after earning $300,000 to $350,000 a year for 20 plus years.
Not to mention the free condos the drug companies give them for prescribing name brand medications when they are under patient. Around the world 5 star vacations for their friends or families.
That’s how our major pharmaceutical companies make eight & one half billion dollars on one drug per YEAR! Right no error per YEAR. that’s after paying off the doctors for prescribing the patented
Medications
SEE it’s all a matter of magnitude but that doesn’t make it right.
And people wonder why we can’t get socialized medicine like England and Canada.

Now if you had a individual apartment that you rented coming out of your income you may fall into a income and expense level that might get you the benefits you are looking for.
Of course you may have to drop your child off to your Mom’s every day for free child care until you get approved on your own merits.I don’t think they can discriminate with your Mom babysitting for her independently separately living daughter with her own apartment. or baby sitting for her grandchild or paying for a helper to allow your mother to mind your baby in your Mother’s home.
Yeah,
It’s hard doing it right and standing up on your own.
It takes time but you’ll be your own person not a spoiled person taking advantage of society and all the angles that many doctors and lawyers do.
